I asked Bertolt if he felt as if he could get out of the deal - if he could say no when it was offered. He said no. So not only did he agree to it, but he was manipulated into doing so - even if he hadn't wanted to agree, there would have been no backing out.
...You know, in my world, a creature like that isn't an angel. A being who descends to give temptations and impossible bargains to mankind to make them commit evil is none other than the devil.
