I remember an old man promising to help an angry teenager save everyone. But the old man's now an angry old man and the teenager needs to help him first before he can help everyone else.
[A pause, and then he continues on.]
It's not a happy letter, and at least some of it is probably stuff she told you in your letter anyway. But you need to read the rest of it too. It might help, a little bit.
[Maybe someday Rin will explain what he really means when he says 'old man'. But for now, Sholmes gets to read things!]
Rin,
Getting to know you has been a joy. You have one of the biggest hearts of anyone I have encountered. It has distressed me to know that despite becoming friends and trying to work together, I have had to lie to you, and I have caused you such pain, and I have been unworthy of the trust you have placed in me. I am deeply sorry for that. But the words you spoke last week meant the world to me. To think that maybe, had we been able to talk about it, you still would have wanted to understand.
It's that quality of yours, that open heart and desire to understand the truth whatever it may be, that makes me certain you will be the key to finding our way through this. So please keep trying. I'll be counting on you and cheering you on.
Yours truly,
Susato Mikotoba
[Rin has more to say too, to explain why he's showing this to Sholmes, but he's going to wait for Sholmes to read it first.]
Er...I thought she would have mentioned it, but...
[He can't possibly tell Sholmes the most important part if Susato didn't, but.]
Susato and I worked out a way to figure out who has killed here. We were working together to narrow down the group. But going by this letter, she must've lied about some of the things she told me. To uh, protect people.
Well, she's smart, yeah? She must've seen something I didn't see.
[He pauses again. This is the most he's thought about his words before speaking them.]
The last time I talked to her in private, I talked to her about how we had to help the killers. They can't confess, they'll be punished if ANYONE finds out what they did without them getting voted out. And at first I just wanted to find the killers and force them to apologize, but that was way before I found out that confronting them would make things worse.
I...think Susato saw that, before I did. So I think she lied on what she found out, to protect the killers. Because I don't wanna hurt any of them, and I know she didn't want to either. But me even saying something to them will hurt them, so she must have intervened before I could muck things up.
She really cared, you know? Even when it came to the killers, she cared. They need help, but there's so many rules on how we can help them without killing them.
It might have been. But I think you needed to hear that too, you know. That last part.
"That open heart and desire to understand the truth whatever it may be, that makes me certain you will be the key to finding our way through this." But that doesn't just apply to me, yeah? Everyone can do it, and everyone has to do it. One person can't bridge the gaps between everyone here.
That's true. One person can't do everything. He must reach out to others, and hold strong. [...He looks up at Rin.] There's...a strong meaning in that. There really is.
Yeah. Even if a person wants to help everyone, sometimes they have people they really dislike. Or who really dislike them. And if that person tries to help someone they have a bad rap with, it'll just make things worse. But if that person gets help from someone else, then they can help cover those areas where personalities clash.
week 5 post trial
[Someone is inside, at least! He's in the dining hall.]
[He's staring blankly at the wall.]
[Everything just happens, huh.]

Is he sitting or is he standing? Regardless Rin is going to end up at his side, but it matters for what he's going to do next.]

[He looks over, but its like he's a bit dazed. Numb, really.]

On top of the cookie is the letter Rin had gotten at trial. The one from Susato.]

[He blinks down at it, before turning back to Rin.]
What...what's this?

[MUMBLING "NOT THAT OLD"]
[But he moves his attention to the letter to look at it for a moment.]
....Alright.
[He says. Fine. He'll pick it up to read.]

[This is...something different from his letter.]
[His heart sinks. It's already at the bottom.]
What...did you talk to her about?

[Ha.]
[Hahaha.]
Well. Why do you think she did that?

[His eyebrows furrow together as he carefully folds the letter back up.]
She really was looking out for so many others. Myself, included. [...] I do wish she would have let me know, but...I suppose that was her mercy to me.

For the unity of everyone, yes? So that we can truly, honestly, work towards escaping this place. Once and for all.

[He holds out his hand for a fist-bump.]

[Places his hand on top of the fist??????]
[HE IS VICTORIAN]
no subject
No, no, not like that. Here, make a fist just like mine.

See? Like that. It's kinda like a handshake, but you usually do it when you're agreeing with someone on something.
no subject
[Just...a bump?]
I see! How interesting. Like a thumbs up, yes? But its...fist against fist.
[please tell sholmes not to ask someone to fist him thank you]
no subject
[Maybe Sholmes will be spared from asking someone to fist him. Maybe.]
