[He's about to say, 'well, there's always Zieks'. Before he remembers Zieks is actually dead.]
I've got some whiskey Lup smuggled out from the Ice Bar in my room, c'mon.
[He'll raise an arm to go around Sholmes' shoulders, if he's receptive. Partly because he figures Sholmes could do with the comfort, partly because his leg is still fucked.
He'll lead him to his room. It's time to get sad victorian wasted.]
[He'll allow that, even raising his own arm to stabilize him across his shoulders. The night is long and endless and yet oddly comfortable, in its own way. It's good to spend it a bit with someone who understands that.]
You haven't looked toward healing your leg, my dear fellow?
Been a bit busy, haven't I? It's fine. Nothing I haven't dealt with before, I assure you.
[With the trial and the everything. Maybe he'll go get it looked at in the next place. He closes the door gently behind them, grabbing the bottle of whiskey off the bedside table and sitting down on the bed.]
Ha. That's a drastic way to walk away from one's past. Crypt, though? Very fitting.
[And he's nodding his thanks before sipping it down, wincing slightly.]
Mm. [He thinks for a moment, silent.] No, I think...I have to talk about it. Else it will destroy me. [Another pause, his eye circles dark.] I never thought I would...loose so many people I cared for, in such a short period of time.
That Miss Susato had a hand in his death? Yes. Admittedly, I did. But I turned to cold logic, and thought that the facts together didn't make sense. I still remember when I told her that. She just...cried. Tried to put on a brave face. Told me that I was correct.
Don't understand what that girl wanted. It's clear she felt like we all saw her as helpless, but I don't think she understood that the majority of the people here just trusted her to an almost irrational degree.
I suspected, just a bit at the time, but it was never a question if I'd bring it up and put her at risk of execution. I'm just not that noble. And after that, well, me and Alis figured out she was at least an accomplice very quickly. She was still so fixated on this idea that nobody even saw what she was capable of, though...
[He shakes his head. He's pouring himself more whiskey.]
Even though we now know it was her, I still don't see anything definitive pointing to her that couldn't also point right at Yukio Okumura or Reze. No wonder she was so frustrated during our little meetings, I suppose.
...There's a story about that girl I could tell you. There was a terrible incident where a girl we knew went missing in the night, and we found her in a pawnshop across the way from the flat. I was shot by burglars who happened to be in the place, and as our friend went to grab the police to help me, I told Miss Susato to check the backroom, where the girl, Gina, may be located. The door there was locked. Miss Susato happened to have grabbed an invention of my daughter that allowed one to create openings in doors, so...she used that, to look inside, seeing the poor pawnshop owner dead. Technically, it was wrong. To make such a drastic adjustment to the crime scene was a crime in and of itself.
[A sip from the whiskey.]
She regretted it, of course. But she kept the secret with her, and later, when she visited me in the hospital, she bade me keep it secret as well. That invention needed to be used at a decisive moment in the trial that came afterwards, but the fact of the matter stands that...if she had let that secret out before the whole thing, it could have compromised the whole trial.
[He's silent for a moment.]
Miss Susato is a determined young woman who can keep secrets where it counts. But yes, perhaps she didn't realize how many had put their hand on her shoulder, seeing her as a beacon of good in these cruel times. Anyone is capable of cruelty. I do believe, however, that whatever she undertook, even something as vile as murder, she did it on her own terms, not anyone else's. Why, she even she drugged Mr. Rochalizo and carefully arranged things on her very own murder!
[A short, sharp little noise, like a laugh.]
That's the type of young lady she was. She wanted her own path. She made sure she got it.
The rules you humans choose to follow never fails to astound me.
[That's bad...? He would've killed someone for less. He would've killed someone for fun??]
But that sounds like her. I, for one, never actually thought she was incapable of murder. Really surprised her chosen target was Rex but I suppose after further consideration it makes sense she didn't go out of her way to choose to specifically go after someone like me, who maybe deserves it by the standards of your law.
Wasn't personal, so why pick and choose?
[He smiles, fond. He's not sure that he would be her first pick if that were her motivation, but...]
She was so caught up on being offended at being put on a pedestal that she didn't realize she'd beaten the whole lot of us.
...She nearly beat the entire game, for that matter. That takes a lot of guts.
Ha. Sometimes rules are in place to reign in the wild. Not that mattered ever too much to me.
[Not as far as the killing, though, but. Well! He's broken many laws before. He'll continue to do so. That's how he is.]
Hm, it does make sense. A detached choice. Someone not personally close, someone not personally hated. A neutral thing, entirely.
[He twists his mouth to the side, conflicted. He doesn't want to be proud of the fact that she killed. She wouldn't be happy to be complimented for murder.]
Though I am against the fact that she murdered in the first place...I must say, her genius at the whole deal is commendable just for that by itself.

[There's a slight edge of light amusement from him in his tone.]
But yes. A sodding drink is exactly what we need. Doctor's orders.

Make yourself at home, Detective.

[He frowns a bit. Spike PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.]
[But he'll walk in to go sit on the bed next to the man, taking off his hat to thread a hand through his own hair.]
A home away from home, huh? It feels like a lifetime since I saw home.

[He manages to find two cups he's squirrelled away and pours them both something sizable.] Miss my crypt, though...
[He takes a big sip of his own whiskey.]
You wanna talk about it? Or are we avoiding the elephant in the room?

[He grimaces. He's not a slow drinker, so he will fully finish his drink in two sips.]
You haven't lost them all, though. We're getting Susato back. Come hell or high water.
...Did you suspect? About Rex?
no subject
Yes, of course. Of course. Nothing else matters.
[...His face grows sullen at the question.]
